Ridgetop Elementary is a small school. The majority of the students need financial assistance. They have heard of UT. However, they don't necessarilly believe that college is a possible goal for them. To participate in the program, a mentor visits their mentee for one hour a week to help them. Usually, the mentor will take their assigned mentee out of class for an hour and do whatever the s/he needs help with. Sometimes, all the student needs is a little recess! As a mentor/tutor, we reflect on our days in elementary school and use those memories to teach, and learn quite a bit in return from the mentee. These are such awesome kids, who may not have such opportunity for attention anywhere else. It's not necessarily that they come from harmful homes, but just that their parents work such long hours. There is no blanket statement that could be said of all the kids- except that a mentor’s time and devotion is appreciated. I promise you that. Please email Shira Butler if you are interested.
